Italian apple: one a day keeps the teacher away

The Italian word of the day is PRIMAVERA (Let’s hope!).

Primavera (singular noun, feminine; plural noun: primavere).

English equivalence: Spring.

Canadian equivalence: I wish, eh!

Origin:  Indo European root with the meaning of “ardent”, “shining”; later, in Latin, from [primo] “beginning” and [ver].

Definition: from an astronomical point of view, in the Northern Hemisphere, it starts with March Equinox (around March 21st), and ends with the Northern Solstice (around June 21st).

Some are the indications that spring is behind the corner. Let’s take a look at some of them:

·         Extended daylight hours

·         Temperature starts rising

·         Most of the trees stretch their proud branches to the sky to help their bids bloom

·         People are smiling again

·         Nice pastel color shirts matching the color of the sky, and generally speaking the colors of Nature, are coming out from the closets.

Now let’s see what happens here.

·         We have more hours of light!

·         Fleet of flip flops are already waiting behind the door of the backyard, but we need to wait until the snow melts down.

·         The trees, after the snow disappeared, look like small puppets with broken little arms. The famous ice storm that hit Toronto last December, left its mark.

·          The evergreen trees keep being green and straight as usual. For them, the melting of the snow is just like shaking tones of dandruff off

·         People sigh and pronounce sentences like: “We are almost there! Just a little bit more...” Claudia smiles.

·         Our pastel colored clothes are still in the closet buried under tons of odd gloves, boots stained by the salt...with the only exception of those flip flops we took out just in case...

·          At Dollaramas shelves are full of watering cans, vases and pots, fertilizer, tin butterflies and happy ladybugs. We are still looking for the salt to melt the snow!

Joking aside, I can truly feel spring in the air. Even though tomorrow they’re calling for snow and the temperature should drop below 10, spring is here! I met her at the pharmacy store. I was looking for salt, she was looking for antihistamine pills...

Have a good day!
