ClaudiaPedia_Pazienza_

The word of the day is: PAZIENZA (la pazienza)

La parola del giorno è PAZIENZA

Pazienza, noun, feminine, singular

Pazienza, sostantivo, femminile, singolare.

English equivalent: “Patience”

Equivalente inglese: Patience.

Origin: it derives from Vulgar Latin patientia with the meaning of “patience, submission”. Patientia, on its part, derives from the verb patīre, meaning “to endure, to suffer.”

What’s PAZIENZA according to the definition we find on a dictionary? The ability of a person to “postpone” a reaction, keeping toward the initial provocation a neutral attitude. “Being patient” means to be able to bear a pain, misfortune, or an unforeseen difficulty without loss of temper or complaints. A certain amount of calm, consistency, assiduity are necessary when applying the art of being patient.

Let’s use it in a couple of sentences / Proviamo a inserirlo in alcune frasi:

1)      Calm is the virtue of strong / La pazienza è la virtù dei forti.

Really? Now, that’s easy to say, but very difficult to apply. I don’t know why I picture the first person who said that in a very comfortable situation. Maybe he (I don’t want to explain why I don’t picture that person as a “she”) was just sipping some tasty red wine, eating some good food and playing philosopher. Who was he talking to? His wife? A slave? A child struggling to demonstrate the earth was round and not flat?

Who knows!

However, I must admit, I agree with him. Maybe “he” was just “me” in another life...long time ago.

Davvero?

2)      Whenever Claudia uses the words “you need to be patient”, she can feel the aversion of the person she is talking to.

The fact is that I know many times I can be very unpopular, especially when I start explaining why, instead of complaining too much, we should invest our time in better occupations. I sound boring, too boring. So boring that if I had the opportunity to separate my mouth from the rest of my body, this one would fly away with no hesitations.

Some of you are smiling. I know. Especially those who agree with what I’ve just said. But, you know what? It sounds boring, but it’s so true. We all need to be patient, to wait our turn in life while working on that. I have to be patient every time somebody hurts me with no apparent reason. You have to be patient and work really hard when you move to another country. Nobody was waiting for us. Nobody will wait for us.

Lo so. Nessuno ci stava aspettando. Nessuno ci aspetterà.

Today is the international World Poetry Day. I usually prefer prose, although there is something I want to share with you. In some way the following verses, long time ago, affected relentlessly my life. They speak of a journey, and in my opinion of patience and discipline.

From Ulysses by Alfred, Lord, Tennyson

(...)Come, my friends,
'T is not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

(…)Venite, amici miei,
Può darsi che i gorghi ci risucchino;
Muoveva la terra e il cielo, ciò che siamo, siamo;

ClaudiaPedia_SPALARE_PALA (Italian and English)

The words of the day are two: SPALARE and PALA

Spalare, transitive verb.

Spalare, verbo transitivo.

English equivalence: to shovel

Equivalente inglese: to shovel

Canadian equivalence: Are you kidding me?

Equivalente canadese: Mi prendi in giro?

Etymology: to remove (togliere via) with a shovel (con una pala).

Etimologia: togliere via con una pala

Let’s try to use it in a couple of sentences / Proviamo a inserirlo in un paio di frasi:

1)      If you thought spring was behind the corner, well my friend, BIG MISTAKE! Take the shovel and SHOVEL! (imperative verb)

(verbo imperativo)

2)      Alessandro cannot shovel because he has a terrible back pain. Who is going to do that? A squirrel? A racoon? No! Claudia can do that! She a has a small shovel for little girls and with the little red shovel, she can shovel all the snow away! Hooray!

No!

Now, let’s try to cojugate it / Adesso coniughiamolo:

I shovel

You shovel

My neighbor doesn’t shovel. He has a snow removal machine. Lucky him!

Io spalo

Tu spali

Il mio vicino non spala. Ha una macchinario che rimuove la neve. Beato lui!

Buona giornata!

Phase 3_Landscape and Happiness

Today it is just a morning thought I want to share.

A new phase in my immigration process has started. When I first arrived, I had often to go beyond my shyness or uncertainty when I was expected to do important things: talk to strangers remembering to smile, go to offices to have some documents issued, meet teachers, trainers, students, etc…

In this process, at least for me, a big impact was represented by the land itself. The discovery of the territory even for basic things (community center, school, Wall-Mart, etc…) was psychologically speaking challenging for me. I did it, of course, because my sense of self-discipline usually surpasses my fears.

Three years and a half later, heading north with my car, I suddenly realized that for the very first time I was just excited of going somewhere I didn’t know. With my printed Google map itinerary beside me, the music on, a grey sky and some air chilly enough to preannounce the approach of cold season, it was nothing less than pure genuine happiness!

The interesting fact is that you don’ t realize that little by little you are reaching that point where something that makes you feel uncertain, apparently out of the blue, becomes easy, natural, nice and actually exciting. This is part of the process as well and it’s something I like to share with any new comer I meet here. Be confident! Amazing results are right behind a corner waiting for you. It is just a matter to find the corner first, though!
